My daughter said I should write a blog about failure. She asked why I hadn’t loaded new paintings lately and my response was that I had been painting, but that the ones I hadn’t given away as wedding gifts, Father’s Day gifts, etc. had all been bombs.
I do this from time to time. One bomb after the other. This isn’t like artist’s block where you can’t paint. This is when you paint and paint and paint and the result is unrelentingly boring or garish or a bad concept. You will shortly paint at a better skill level as long as you don’t beat up on yourself and re-examine these bad paintings, looking for clues. A fellow artist, someone who doesn’t like you or your stuff, can help. They can offer very helpful critiques. This is thick skin territory. Remember that this will help you. Ignore the opinion based comments and focus on the fact based comments. This is an important part of becoming the best artist you can be.
