I’ve had several major illnesses in my life and consequently spent recovery time quietly in my room. The words of the Beach Boy song “In My Room” have always had a haunting significance for me. When I was young, I couldn’t believe that a 16 year old teenage male had gotten something so complicated so right. Of course, I didn’t know many teenage boys at the time having gone to all girls schools, so you’ll have to excuse my ignorance.
In my room,is where I learned to be an artist. My mother loved her house and loved order. Most artists are not neat freaks and their studio space reflects the way their brains work. As artists age, organization of studio space becomes critical because most artists have galleries to satisfy in a timely manner and an organized space increases work flow. In my room, I could work on my projects.
If you’re too young to be familiar with the song, take time to listen to it. The music is lovely and the lyrics are simple and clear. Clarity is something that becomes cherished as experience renders most things a tangled mess.
